remAid HoloLens App does not receive a Room Code

In case the remAid HoloLens App does not receive a Room Code, first make sure that the HoloLens is connected to WiFi and that you have a working internet connection.

If your internet connection is working well, but you still do not receive a Room Code, you can try to restart the app. There might have been an error which caused the HoloLens to not allow the connection to our servers.

If that still doesn’t help, you can try to restart the HoloLens completely.

HoloLens is overheating

If the HoloLens is overheating, it should display a warning message and might turn off. In this case you should let the HoloLens cool down for at least half an hour, before starting again.

Please note, that charging the HoloLens generates a lot of heat which could lead to a reduced operating time of the HoloLens. It is possible to use the HoloLens while it is chargin. But it could lead to a lot quicker overheating of the HoloLens, than it would under normal circumstances.

Please make sure, that you always operate the HoloLens at room temperature. Do not cover the HoloLens with cloth or anything else, as this could lead to overheating.

General Recommendations for HoloLens Usage

Period of use

  • A fully loaded and cool HoloLens mostly runs stable performing remAid software without overheating for around one hour.
  • Consequently, the remAid use case should not take longer than an hour.
  • In case the use case takes longer, make sure to have a second HoloLens and time for HoloLens exchange available.

Use cases

  • remAid shouldn’t be used for life critical or risky tasks.

Fallback solution

  • It helps to have a second fully loaded HoloLens available, in case that the currently used HoloLens is overheating.
  • The Operator must be able to perform all tasks on their own and without the help of the Spectator, as unexpected problems, e.g. HoloLens overheating or a lack of internet connection might occur.

Battery and managing heat

  • The battery should be fully charged
  • A fully or nearly fully charged battery reduces the risk of battery overheating. Using the HoloLens with a lower battery level generates more battery heating, than when the battery is charged.
  • To reduce battery overheating, it helps to connect the HoloLens 2 to an external power source (e.g. power bank).
  • You can connect HoloLens 2 to an external power source even when the internal battery is already fully charged.
  • If heat is still an issue after following steps above, consider using a charger or battery pack that limits charging to 1.5A. Note that this option won't provide as much operating time since the internal battery will still slowly deplete.

Charging

  • Charging HoloLens generates heat. The more rapid the charge, the more heat is generated.
  • After charging the HoloLens, it should cool down for around 30 minutes before using it. Using the HoloLens directly after charging increases the risk of battery overheating.
  • Use the charger and the USB Type-C cable that came with the HoloLens 2 as that is the best way to charge your device. The charger included with HoloLens 2 provides up to 9V @ 2A (18W).
  • Along with the supplied wall charger, HoloLens 2 devices can charge the battery to full in less than 65 minutes when the device is in standby.
  • It's recommended that HoloLens 2 be charged at 5V/1.5A minimum. Chargers that can't supply at least 5V/1.5A should not be used.
  • If those accessories aren't available, make sure the charger that's available can support at least 15W of power.
  • If possible, avoid using a PC to charge the device over USB, which is slow.

Temperature and regulatory information

  • HoloLens is rated as a commercial product for operation at +50ºF (+10ºC) to +80ºF (+27ºC).
  • Store device in an environment within temperature range (either in Standby or Off) for an hour before using the device.
  • Use device indoors
  • Use device in shade; even indoors avoid direct sunlight though windows or skylights

For more information on these types of issues please refer to the official HoloLens Documentation.
